ame 7 AME5297 rev . a.05 3a, 18v , 500khz synchronous ste p-down dc/dc converter n detailed de scri pti ion internal v cc regulator the internal v cc regulator is adjusted 5.0v to provide power to the internal circuits from input voltage v in . in order to maintain the v cc voltage sta bly , a 0.1 m f-to-1 m f cera mic ca pa citor is re commended. enable and soft startthe en pin provides electrical on/off control of the regu- lator . when the en pin voltage exceeds the lockout thre sh- old voltage, the regulator starts to operate a nd the soft start begin s to charge the extern al ca pa citor . if the en pin voltage is pulled below the lockout threshold voltage, theregulator stops switching a nd the soft start re sets. con- ne cting the en pin to ground or to a ny voltage le ss tha n 1.2v will disa ble the regulator a nd a ctivate the shutdown mode. t o li mit the start-up inrush current, a soft-start circuit is used to ra mp up the reference voltage from 0v to its f in al value line arly . the soft start ti me ca n be calcu- lated a s f ollows: u nder v oltage lockout (uvlo) the AME5297 incorporate s a n under voltage lockout cir- cuit to keep the device disabled when the input voltagevin is below the uvlo start thre shold voltage. during powering up, the intern al circuits are held in a ctive a nd the soft start is grounded until the input voltage v in exceeds the uvlo start threshold voltage. once the uvlo startthre shold voltage is re a ched, the soft start is a ctivated a nd the device begins to operate. the device operates untilthe input voltage v in falls below the uvlo stop threshold voltage. the typical hysteresis in the uvlo comparatoris 650mv . s s s s s s i c 0 . 8 t = thermal shutdown the AME5297 prote cts itsel f from overhe ating with a n internal thermal shutdown circuit. if the junction tempera-ture exceeds the thermal shutdown threshold, the voltage reference is grounded a nd the shutdown mode is a ctivated. the AME5297 is re started under control of the soft start automatically when the junction temperature drops 20 o c below the thermal shutdown threshold. over-current protection and hiccup modethe over-current limiting is implemented by cycle-by- cycle monitoring the current through the high side mosfet . if the pe a k current exceeds the over-current li mit thre sh- old, the high side mosfet is turned off. when the feed-ba ck voltage v fb drops below 0.4v , the oscillator frequency is reduced to about 1/4 of the normal frequency to ensurethat the inductor current ha s more ti me to de cay , thereby preventing run away . me a nwhile, the AME5297 enters hic- cup mode, the average short circuit current is greatly re-duced to allevi ate the thermal issue a nd to prote ct the regulator . entern al bootstra p circuit the extern al bootstra p circuit contain s a ca pa citor a nd a re sistor . a bootstra p ca pa citor provide s power f or the high side mosfet driver . in order to supply the ac current a nd maintain the bst -sw voltage sta bly at the switching con- dition of the high side mosfet , a 0.1 m f low esr cera mic ca pa citor is re commended. the bootstra p re sistor which sugge sts pla cing 10 w is utilized to reduce switching spike voltage a nd noise.
ame 8 AME5297 rev . a.05 3a, 18v , 500khz synchronous ste p-down dc/dc converter n application inf ormation inductor selectionfor most a pplication s, the inducta nce ra nge is chosen ba sed on the de sired ri pple current. a larger inducta nce reduce s ri pple current; me a nwhile, the output ri pple volt- age de cre a se s. determine inducta nce is to allow the pe a k- to-pe a k ri pple current to be a pproxi mately 30% of the maxi mum loa d current. the inducta nce value ca n be cal- culated by: where f is the oscillator frequency , v in is the in put volt- age, v out is the output voltage, a nd d i l is the pe a k-to-pe a k inductor ri pple current. choose a n inductor that will not saturate under the maxi mum inductor pe a k current, cal- culated by: where i load is the load current. the choice of which style inductor to use mainly depends on the price vs. sizerequire ments a nd a ny emi con straints. in put ca pa citor the input current to the buck converter is discontinu- ous; theref ore a n in put ca pa citor is required to supply the ac current while maintaining the dc in put voltage. in or- der to prevent large voltage drop, a low esr ca pa citors is re commended f or the be st perf orma nce. cera mic ca pa ci- tors are preferred, but ta ntalum or low-esr ele ctrolytic ca pa citors will also be sugge sted. choose x5r or x7r diele ctrics when using cera mic ca pa citors. since the in- put ca pa citor a bsorbs the in put switching current, it re- quire s a n a dequate ri pple current rating. the rms current in the in put ca pa citor ca n be e sti mated by:       - = i n o u t l o u t v v 1  i f v l       - + = i n o u t l o u t l o a d l p e a k v v 1  i f 2 v i i       - = i n o u t i n o u t l o a d c i n v v 1 v v i i at v in = 2v out , where i cin = i load /2 is the worst-ca se condition occurs. for si mplif ication, use a n in put ca pa ci- tor with a rms current rating gre ater tha n hal f of the maxi- mum loa d current. when using cera mic ca pa citors, ma ke sure that they have enough ca pa cita nce to provide suf f i- cient charge to prevent excessive voltage ripple at input.when using ele ctrolytic or ta ntalum ca pa citors, a high quality , small cera mic ca pa citor , i.e. 0.1 m f , should be pla ced a s close to the ic a s possible. the in put voltage ri pple f or low esr ca pa citors ca n be e sti mated by: where c in is the in put ca pa cita nce value. output ca pa citor the output ca pa citor (c out ) is required to maintain the dc output voltage. cera mic, ta ntalum, or low esr ele c- trolytic ca pa citors are re commended. low esr ca pa ci- tors are preferred to kee p the output voltage ri pple low . the output voltage ri pple ca n be e sti mated by: where r esr is the equivalent serie s re sista nce (esr) value of the output ca pa citor a nd c out is the output ca pa ci- ta nce value. when using cera mic ca pa citors, the i mpeda nce at the switching frequency is domin ated by the ca pa cita nce which is the main cause for the output voltage ripple. for simpli-f ication, the output voltage ri pple ca n be e sti mated by:       - = i n o u t i n o u t i n l o a d i n v v 1 v v f c i  v       +       - = o u t e s r i n o u t o u t o u t c f 8 1 r v v 1 l f v  v       - = i n o u t o u t 2 o u t o u t v v 1 c l f 8 v  v
